OUR GUIDE TO MORAL AND PHYSICAL HEALING
In the Sunnah of the Prophet (s.a.v.), seeking cure and treatment for diseases was encouraged and many recommendations were given for treatment with plants. Medicine of the Prophet covers methods to treat health problems by using medicinal plants found in nature. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged us to seek treatment for a healthy life and to make use of plants in doing so by saying, ‘Allah has created the cure for every problem; seek healing’. In this context, medicinal plants such as senna have an important place in the Prophetic Medicine.
Senna is a plant that grows in the semi-desert climates of Africa, India and Arabia, especially around Mecca(The best quality one), and has an important place in the Prophetic Medicine. The hot and dry nature of this plant helps to remove harmful substances accumulated in the body. Senna is especially known as a healing agent in balancing body fluids such as bile, love and phlegm. Its first and most prominent feature is that it provides a laxative effect; it contributes to the relaxation of the intestines by cleansing the body naturally. In addition, it is also known to strengthen the heart and alleviate mental distress, such as nervosity. The Prophet (s.a.w.) said, ‘Use senna; if there was healing in anything other than death, it would be in senna’, emphasising the powerful healing power of senna.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO USE SENNA IN MODERATION
The Prophet's (SAW) instructions on the use of senna include the careful and moderate use of this herb. When needed, a handful of senna leaves should be boiled with three cups of water and drunk. It is recommended to take a glass of this mixture in the morning and evening; however, it is not recommended to use too much. Because, like every medicinal plant, too much senna can cause discomfort in the body. Esmâ bint-i Umeys (r.a.) narrated that one day the Prophet (s.a.w.) asked her what she used as a laxative and she replied, ‘I use senna’. Thereupon, the Prophet (SAW) recommended senna and drew attention to its healing properties. According to some narrations, our Prophet (SAW) even used senna by mixing it with date juice and thus increased its effect even more. Senna is recommended in many sources by using Senna and senut together. Our Prophet (SAW) said, ‘When you need to be treated, use senna and senut; there is healing for every problem except death’. The meaning of the term ‘senut’ in this narration has been interpreted in different ways. Some sources state that senut can be honey, cumin, dill or fennel, while others state that it is honey mixed with clarified butter. Both ingredients are thought to have cleansing and relaxing properties.
HAS COUNTLESS BENEFITS
Senna is a plant recommended not only for the digestive system, but also for spiritual relaxation and mental calmness. The effect of cassia alleviating the nausea offers healing especially to those who experience inner restlessness. Thanks to its expectorant properties, it relaxes the respiratory tract and contributes to the purification of heavy and negative effects in the body. Today, senna can be consumed directly as tea, as well as used in capsule and tablet forms as a natural laxative. However, long-term use is not recommended; It is recommended to stop using it when it provides a balance to the body.
Beyond its traditional uses, senna plant also finds its place in modern herbal treatment methods. In daily life, senna tea is preferred for its intestinal relaxing and detoxifying effect. It can be used as a natural solution to alleviate digestive problems, especially when travelling or staying inactive for a long time. In some herbalists, senna oil is also used in hair care. This oil, which is thought to help strengthen hair follicles, is also preferred for skin and hair health.
Senna is a special plant that gives peace to both body and soul as one of the sources of healing created by Allah. This medicinal plant, which contributes to health under the guidance of Tıbb Al-Nabawi, offers an important support in eliminating ailments when used in moderation and correctly.
