What is Shukr? The Importance of Shukr to Allah
Shukr is to recognize, respect, and give thanks to the one who granted you a blessing when you receive it.
Allah, the Lord of all worlds, is the sole owner of all blessings and the only One who bestows them upon humanity and all creatures. Therefore, the only place where thanks should be given is His exalted station. Shukr, in this sense, means to frequently remember Allah and His blessings by praising Him and reflecting on His gifts. It also involves using the blessings in accordance with their purpose and wisdom, avoiding wastefulness and ingratitude. The Qur'an mentions shukr in many verses to warn and give good news.
In the 7th verse of Surah Ibrahim, it is stated: "And remember when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you give thanks, I will increase your favor upon you; but if you are ungrateful, indeed, My punishment is severe.'"
As indicated in numerous Qur'anic verses and Hadiths, thanking for a blessing leads to its increase, multiplication, beautification, and the attainment of Allah's pleasure.
How to Thank Allah?
Allah's blessings cannot be counted, and they can be divided into material and spiritual blessings. It is necessary to thank each blessing in its own way.
The gratitude for material blessings, such as wealth, is helping others through zakat and charity. The gratitude for knowledge, which Allah grants, is to teach it to those who do not know, to strive to spread it, and to use it in a way that benefits humanity and all creatures.
The greatest gratitude is for health, which is to worship and serve Allah correctly.
The greatest blessing that Allah has given His servants is belief in Allah, following the Prophet Muhammad (saw), and continuing life with guidance. The gratitude for these blessings is to remember Allah properly, to say it with the tongue and affirm it with the heart.
According to a narration in Ismail Haqqi Bursevi’s "Ruh'ul Bayan" Tafsir: Abu Ali Jurjani said: "If you give thanks for the blessing of Islam, I will add faith to it. If you praise Me for faith, I will grant you goodness. If you thank for goodness, I will give you knowledge. If you thank for knowledge, I will bring you to the station of union. If you thank for union, I will bring you closer to Me. If you thank for this nearness, I will bring you to the state of proximity. These statements show that gratitude is the ladder of progress and the means to rise in spiritual ranks."
“O you who have believed, eat of the pure things We have provided for you and give thanks to Allah if it is indeed Him that you worship.”
Surah Al-Baqarah/172
What is Shukr Qurbani?
Qurbani is Allah's feast for His servants. Slaughtering a qurbani is a sacrifice for the sake of Allah and a way to show thanks for His blessings. It is also a means to earn reward and draw closer to Allah, and it serves as a shield against calamities. Shukr qurbani is a sacrifice made to thank Allah for the countless blessings He has given. These blessings can sometimes be a house, a car, a promotion at work, or it could be surviving a hardship, illness, or an accident, or paying off difficult debts.
Though we may not deserve all of Allah's countless blessings every day, the Shukr Qurbani is a means to give thanks for the beautiful life, health, children, flourishing work, peace, and happiness that Allah has bestowed upon us. It is an offering for the continuation and increase of these blessings.
How to Slaughter a Shukr Qurbani?
A person can either slaughter the Shukr Qurbani themselves or delegate the task to a qualified institution or individual via proxy. The most important consideration when slaughtering the Shukr Qurbani is that the animal must meet the requirements for qurbani. Additionally, it must be slaughtered with the intention of pleasing Allah, invoking His name with Bismillah and Takbir. Furthermore, Islamic sensitivities must be observed during selection, transportation, slaughtering, and when donating the meat. The best practice for a Shukr Qurbani is to donate the meat to those in need or to those serving in the path of Allah. This way, the spiritual rewards of the act will be multiplied. Because through the act of qurbani, which is a form of gratitude with wealth, delivering the meat to students of knowledge and those serving the cause of Allah is supporting the spread of His religion. In this way, both the wealth and the blessing of being a part of the Muslim Ummah are acknowledged with gratitude.
