What is Ashura Day?
The tenth day of the month of Muharram, the first of the Hijri months, is called Ashura Day. It originates from the Arabic word "Ashara", which means the number "10". When we look at history, it has been seen that many beautiful incidents took place on this blessed day. Our Prophet Muhammad Mustafa ('saw) expressed the virtues of both Muharram-i Sharif and Ashura day in his Hadith-i Sharifs.
When is Ashura Day?
Ashura Day is observed every year on the day that falls on the 10th day of Muharram-i Sharif, the first of the Hijri months. This year, July 16, 2024, the 10th day of Muharram-i Sharif, which started on July 7, 2024, will be observed as Ashura Day.
Some Events that took place on Ashura Day
The tenth day of the month of Muharram is the day of 'Ashûrâ. Many great and important events took place on the day of 'Ashoora. According to the statement of the faqih Abu'l-Leys Samarkandî, some of the events that took place on the day of 'Ashoora are as follows:
-The creation of the heavens and the earth,
-The acceptance of Adam's(as) tawbah
-The deliverance of Moses(as) from the evil of Pharaoh and the destruction of Pharaoh,
-The birth of Abraham(as) (peace be upon him) and his deliverance from the fire,
-When Ayyûb (as) was cured of his illness,
-The rescue of Yûnus Alayhis Salâm from the belly of the fish,
-Giving the sultanate to Solomon (peace be upon him),
-The ship of Nûh (peace be upon him) standing on Mount Jûdî,
-The shahada of Hadrat Husayn (r.a.) also took place on the day of 'Ashûrâ.
It is also reported in hadîth-i-sherîf that the Day of Judgment will break on the day of Ashura.
Where does the Ashura meal come from?
Prophet Nûh (a.s.) fasted on the day of 'Ashûrâ when he landed to thank Allâh and ordered the people on the ship to fast as well. Then he gathered seven kinds of food (chickpeas, barley, lentils, wheat, peas, rice, beans, lentils, wheat, peas, rice, beans) from the grains he had left with him, cooked them together and ate them. Today, it is mustahabb to mix the grains and cook them, that is, to cook Ashûra, which is a custom that dates back to the time of Nûh 'alaihis-salâm'.
Fasting and Worship on the Day of Ashura
Allâhu ta'âlâ bestows great rewards on those who obey and worship on the tenth day of the month of Muharram.
Our Prophet (sallallâhu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Whoever is generous to his children on the day of 'Ashoora, Allâhu ta'âlâ will give him ample sustenance for the whole year."
Sufyân-i Sevrî (r.a.) (v. 161), one of the great of the Tâbiîn, said, "We practiced this for fifty years, and we did not see anything other than the breadth of sustenance."
-If small and small provisions are bought on the day of 'Ashoora, there will be abundance in the house for a year.
-Greeting at least ten Muslims once or greeting one Muslim ten times.
-Poor people should be made happy.
-Those who do ghusl on the day of 'Ashûrâ will not suffer from minor or minor illnesses for a year.
When our Prophet (sallallâhu 'alaihi wa sallam) migrated to Madîna-i Munawwara, he saw the Jews fasting on the day of 'Ashûrâ and asked:
"What is this fast?" he asked.
"This day is a great day. This is the day when Allâh (Azza wa Jalla) saved the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. Mûsâ (a.s.) fasted (in gratitude for this favor of Allâh)."
The Prophet (sallallâhu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "We are more worthy than you to revive the Sunnah of Mûsâ (peace be upon him)." He fasted that day and ordered his Companions to do the same. Thus the fast of 'Ashoora became obligatory. However
Fasting on the day of 'Ashoora ceased to be obligatory after the fast of Ramadan was made obligatory (Gunyet al-Talibin).
-On the day of Ashura, the following prayer is recited 10 times: "Sübhânallâhi mil'al-mîzân wa muntahe'l-ılmi wa mablağa'r-rızâ wa zinete'l-arş."
Perform 2 rak'ahs of prayer at the time of mid-morning for the day of 'Ashoora. Recite 1 Fâtiha-i sharîf and 50 Ihlâs-i sharîf in each rak'ah. After the prayer, the following salawat is recited 100 times:
"Allâhumma salli alâ seyyidinâ Muhammadin and alâ âli seyyidinâ Muhammadin and Adam and Nûhin and Abraham and Mûsâ and Îsâ and vamâ beynehüm mine'n-nabiyyîna wa'l-murselîn. Salawâtullâhi wa salâmühû 'alaihim ajmaîn."
-Pray 4 rak'ahs between the noon and asr prayers. Recite 1 Fâtiha and 50 Ihlâs in each rak'ah. After the prayer:
70 istiğfâr-i-sherîf, 70 salawât-i-sherîf and 70 times "Lâ havla velâ kuvvete illâ billâhi'l-aliyyil-azîm". Then pray for the guidance and salvation of the Ummah of Muhammad. Giving Treats and Blessings on the Day of Ashura
In our religion, the virtue of giving to the poor and needy has been declared in verses and Hadiths. On the day of Ashura, it is also very virtuous to give to family members, the needy and orphans. Our Prophet (sallallâhu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Whoever is generous to his children on the day of Ashura, Allâhu ta'âlâ will provide for him throughout the year." For this reason, buying food for your home on the day of Ashura and giving to orphans and those in need is a means of blessing.
